The Ultimate in Luxury Travel
The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the most scenic and rewarding trails on Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting on the western side of the mountain, it offers a gradual ascent, superb acclimatization, and spectacular landscapes, from lush rainforest to alpine desert and glaciers.
Over seven days, you’ll traverse remote wilderness, panoramic ridges, and volcanic terrain before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the Roof of Africa. This route is perfect for climbers seeking solitude, stunning scenery, and a higher chance of summit success.
Itinerary
After transfer from Moshi or Arusha to Lemosho Gate, complete registration and meet your experienced guides. Begin trekking through dense rainforest, surrounded by towering trees, giant ferns, and occasional wildlife like monkeys and exotic birds. The trail gradually ascends, giving you time to enjoy the lush scenery before reaching Big Tree Camp, where you’ll spend the first night immersed in nature.
Leave the rainforest behind as the trail climbs into open moorland, offering panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes and distant peaks. The path gradually ascends across volcanic ridges and unique flora, including giant lobelias and groundsels. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp, where you can enjoy the stunning sunset over the plains and begin to acclimatize to higher altitude.
Today’s trek continues across the remote Shira Plateau, with dramatic views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. The terrain is open and windswept, offering a true sense of the mountain’s grandeur and solitude. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp and spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and enjoying the panoramic vistas, preparing for the more challenging days ahead.
Descend slightly from the Shira Plateau and trek through the Barranco Valley, surrounded by cliffs and dramatic volcanic formations. Today includes the famous Barranco Wall scramble, a challenging but rewarding climb with breathtaking views.
After breakfast, trek across rocky alpine desert landscapes, passing ridges, valleys, and sparse vegetation. Ascend steadily to Barafu Camp, your base for the final summit attempt. Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and preparing mentally and physically for the challenging midnight climb, while taking in spectacular views of the surrounding peaks.
Begin the final ascent at midnight, climbing steeply to Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim, then continuing to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. Witness the sunrise over the continent and celebrate reaching Africa’s highest point.
Complete your final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where each climber receives a summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, celebrating the adventure and reflecting on the diverse landscapes, wildlife, and personal achievement from your Lemosho Route trek.
