The Ultimate in Luxury Travel
The Marangu Route, also called the “Coca-Cola Route,” is Kilimanjaro’s oldest and most established trail. Known for its comfortable hut accommodations, it is the only route that allows climbers to sleep in huts instead of tents, making it ideal for those who prefer a more relaxed approach to trekking.
Over five days, you’ll hike through lush rainforests, open moorlands, and stark alpine deserts, culminating in the summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. With expert guides, scenic landscapes, and cozy huts, this trek is perfect for first-time climbers and those seeking a rewarding, moderately challenging adventure.
Itinerary
After breakfast, transfer from Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate for registration and a briefing on your trek. Begin your journey through lush rainforest, alive with the sounds of birds, exotic plants, and playful monkeys. The trail gently ascends through this vibrant ecosystem, giving you a chance to immerse yourself in the mountain’s beauty before reaching Mandara Hut, where you’ll spend your first night and enjoy the serenity of the forested slopes.
Today’s trek climbs through heather, moorlands, and open landscapes, with sweeping views of Mawenzi Peak on the horizon. As you ascend, the vegetation becomes sparser, providing striking contrast to the dense rainforest below. Arrive at Horombo Hut, where you can relax, take in panoramic mountain vistas, and prepare your body for the higher altitudes ahead. The afternoon offers time to hydrate, rest, and enjoy the crisp mountain air, while soaking in the incredible scenery.
The trail today gradually ascends across the alpine desert, leaving behind most vegetation and entering a stark, lunar-like environment. Trek past the “Last Water Point”, taking in views of Kibo Peak and the distant glaciers that cap the summit. Arrive at Kibo Hut, the base for your summit attempt, and spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and preparing mentally and physically for the challenging midnight ascent. The dramatic scenery along the way offers a preview of the incredible views awaiting at the top.
Summit day! Begin your final push at midnight, climbing steeply to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) along the crater rim. From here, continue to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa, where the sunrise over the continent is a breathtaking reward for your efforts. After celebrating with photos, descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut, reflecting on the immense accomplishment and enjoying the views along the varied terrain. The day combines challenge, exhilaration, and the unforgettable experience of conquering Kilimanjaro.
Descend through moorland and rainforest, retracing your steps with a sense of achievement and wonder. Enjoy the changing scenery, from alpine desert to lush vegetation, before reaching Marangu Gate, where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Celebrate your accomplishment before returning to Moshi or Arusha, carrying memories of Africa’s highest peak and the spectacular landscapes you’ve traversed.
