Nyerere National Park (Former Selous Game Reserve)

Overview

Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, is Africa’s largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

Covering an expansive area of unspoiled wilderness, it offers an exclusive and authentic safari experience. Its vast landscapes, from rivers and lakes to woodlands and grasslands, make it one of Tanzania’s most diverse ecosystems.

The park is home to large populations of elephants, hippos, crocodiles, wild dogs, and numerous antelope species.

How to Get There

The park can be accessed by road from Dar es Salaam in about 5–6 hours, or by daily scheduled flights to various airstrips inside the park. Many travelers prefer flying for convenience and to maximize time on safari.

Weather & Climate

Nyerere has a warm, tropical climate with temperatures ranging between 20°C and 33°C. The dry season (June to October) is best for game viewing, while the wet season (November to May) enhances the park’s natural beauty and is excellent for birdwatching.
